What to Bring on a Scooter Trip in Bali

Whether you're doing a quick beach run or a full North Bali road trip, what you carry on a scooter matters. Space is limited, roads surprise you, and Bali's weather has its own agenda.

Documents (non-negotiable)

  • Your driving license + International Driving Permit - photograph them and email yourself a copy as backup
  • STNK (bike registration) - your owner provides this, keep it with the bike keys
  • Travel insurance card + emergency number - screenshot and keep offline
  • Passport photo page - a phone photo is fine
  • License guide - what you need for Bali

    Safety gear

  • Helmet - your rental includes one. Check the buckle actually works before riding
  • Rain poncho - buy one in Bali for 20,000–50,000 IDR. Carry it always, even in dry season
  • Sunscreen - crucial for long rides, especially coastal and mountain roads
  • Sunglasses or helmet visor - insects at speed hurt
  • Closed-toe shoes - flip flops are fine for quick rides but risky on longer trips
  • Supplies for day rides

  • Reusable water bottle - Bali is hot. Dehydration affects concentration
  • Cash (IDR) - many fuel stops, entry fees and warungs are cash-only. 200,000–500,000 IDR for a day ride
  • Phone charger or power bank - for maps and emergencies
  • Small dry bag or waterproof phone case - essential in rain season
  • Basic first aid - plasters and antiseptic for small drops. Available at any Bali pharmacy (apotek)
  • For longer trips (North Bali, Kintamani)

  • Light jacket or hoodie - mountain areas get cold above 1000m, especially Kintamani and Bedugul
  • Offline maps downloaded (Maps.me or Google Maps offline) - mobile signal is weak in some mountain sections
  • Snacks - warungs are common but not always open on smaller roads
  • Extra cash buffer - further from tourist areas, fewer ATMs
  • Emergency contact list - owner's number, your accommodation, travel insurance
  • What to leave at home

Scooter storage is limited - most have 20–25 litres under the seat, enough for a day pack. Don't take:

  • Laptops or large electronics - vibration is hard on them and theft risk is higher
  • Valuables you can't afford to lose
  • Heavy backpacks - they shift your weight and make the bike less stable
  • Too much luggage for multi-day trips - rent a car instead if you're carrying significant bags
  • FAQ

Do I need a helmet for renting a scooter in Bali? +

Helmets are legally required and your rental will include one. Check that it fits properly and that the chin strap buckle works before riding. For long rides, consider buying a better-quality helmet from a local shop (150,000–400,000 IDR) for comfort.

Should I buy travel insurance before riding a scooter in Bali? +

Yes - this is not optional advice. Make sure your policy explicitly covers motorcycle riding and that you have a valid motorcycle license. Most standard travel policies exclude scooter accidents without a valid IDP.

Can I carry luggage on a rental scooter in Bali? +

A day pack fits easily under the seat or in a small front basket. For significant luggage (suitcases, large bags), rent a car instead. Overloading a scooter is dangerous, especially on Bali's mountain roads.

Do I need a SIM card for navigation in Bali? +

Highly recommended. A local SIM (Telkomsel or Indosat) with data costs 50,000–100,000 IDR for a month. Google Maps works well in most of Bali. Download offline maps for mountain areas where signal drops.
