Bali Volcano Road: Mount Batur Scooter Route
The Kintamani volcano road is Bali's most dramatic ride. You climb through dense jungle, emerge at the rim of the Batur caldera with the volcano and lake below, and descend through coffee and spice plantations. One of those rides you remember for years.

Route waypoints
South Bali (Canggu/Ubud)
Start early. The caldera is most dramatic in the morning - clouds often roll in by midday.
Tegallalang Rice Terraces
Pass through Ubud on the way up. Stop at Tegallalang rice terraces for 30 minutes - iconic views. Entry 50,000 IDR.
Kintamani caldera rim
The main destination. Mount Batur volcano rises from the centre of a massive ancient caldera. Several viewpoint restaurants - stop for coffee and the view.
Lake Batur (optional)
Descend to the lake shore - fishing villages, caldera walls rising all around. Adds 1.5 hours but spectacular.
Coffee plantation stop
Several free-entry plantations on the descent. Try luwak coffee at source. Interesting regardless of whether you buy.
Return south
Return via Ubud or take the scenic east coast route through Sidemen (adds 1-2 hours, worth it).
From our experience
We ride this route ourselves. After punctures, overheated brakes are the most common problem we see. Coming down from Kintamani the descents are long, and the brake fluid can boil. Then the brakes stop working. Engine braking is limited on an automatic scooter, so ride down slowly, brake in short pulses and stop to let the brakes cool.
Practical tips
- Start before 7am - morning light at the caldera is extraordinary, afternoon is often cloudy
- Honda ADV 160 recommended - the climb involves steep switchbacks
- It gets cold at the caldera rim (1,500m elevation) - bring a light jacket
- Take mountain descents slowly, especially if roads are wet
- Fill up fuel before leaving south Bali - stations are sparse near Kintamani
