First-Timer Guide to Riding a Scooter in Bali

Thousands of first-time scooter riders explore Bali every week. Most have a great time. Here is how to make sure you are in that group.

Before you ride: choose the right bike

The single most important decision for a beginner is picking a lightweight bike. Weight makes the biggest difference at low speed - when parking, doing U-turns, stopping on hills.

For first-timers: Honda Scoopy 110cc (93kg) or Honda Vario 125cc (110kg). Both are fully automatic - no clutch, no gears. Avoid the NMAX (127kg) or ADV 160 (133kg) until you are comfortable.

First 30 minutes: practise before the road

Find a quiet area - an empty car park, a hotel driveway, a side road with no traffic. Spend at least 30 minutes on the basics:

  • Starting and stopping smoothly
  • Slow-speed U-turns (the hardest thing for beginners)
  • Emergency braking - squeeze both brakes, do not jam them
  • Looking where you want to go, not at the road directly ahead

Bali road hazards to know

  • Speed bumps (polisi tidur) - everywhere, often unmarked. Hit them too fast and you will lose control. Approach at walking pace.
  • Dogs - stray dogs run across roads unpredictably, especially at night. Slow down if you see dogs on the roadside.
  • Potholes and sand - common after rain. Sand on corners is particularly dangerous - it is like ice under tyres.
  • Traffic turning without signal - always assume the vehicle ahead might turn suddenly. Keep safe distance.
  • Night riding - avoid until you are very comfortable. Hazards are invisible, dogs are more active, many Bali roads have no lighting.

What to do if you fall

Minor drops happen to experienced riders too. What matters is what you do next:

  • Get yourself and the bike off the road immediately
  • Check for injuries - adrenaline masks pain, check yourself carefully
  • Photograph the bike damage before moving it further
  • Call the owner immediately - honesty is always better than hiding damage
  • For injuries: call your travel insurance. Most cover scooter accidents if you have a valid license
