This is a model estimate. The forecast is built on Copernicus (CAMS) data, the European atmosphere monitoring service: the model takes into account satellite observations, emissions, fires and weather, and is recalculated twice a day. The model works on a coarse grid, so neighbouring areas will show the same value. Exact values for a specific place can only be given by sensors nearby.

Where the number comes from: "station" is a real measurement nearby, "sensors" are residents' sensors, "estimate" is a model calculation.

What to do right now

Let's make the Bali air map better together 🌿

We plan to install our own air quality sensors to make air data in Bali more accessible and easier to understand.

But the more sensors, the fuller the picture! If you already have your own sensor and you also care about what we breathe on the island, let's join forces.

Share the data from your device with us: together we can make the Bali air quality map more accurate, more detailed and more useful for everyone.

Why does Bali have air pollution?

Bali's air quality varies significantly by area and season. Three factors dominate:

  • 1. Open trash burning

Bali's landfills are at capacity and waste collection is uneven across districts. Open burning of household waste - including plastics - happens daily in many neighbourhoods, releasing significant PM2.5 and toxic compounds.

  • 2. Traffic emissions

Over 4 million registered motor vehicles on an island the size of Rhode Island. Old motorcycles and trucks with poor emission control contribute to ground-level NO₂ in city areas.

  • 3. Seasonal burning

During dry season (Apr–Oct), agricultural burning and forest fires in neighbouring islands push pollution levels higher across all of Bali - especially inland areas without sea breeze.

Cleaner mobility: Sanur LEZ and electric scooters

In 2026, Sanur became Bali's first official Low Emission Zone, restricting certain combustion vehicles in favour of electric alternatives. Ubud, Nusa Dua and Nusa Penida are publicly discussed as candidates for similar restrictions.

Electric scooters produce zero local emissions, run silently, and are increasingly available for rent in Bali. If you're staying in or near an LEZ - or you'd just prefer to ride without contributing smoke and noise - electric is a real option in 2026.

FAQ

Is Bali's air safe to breathe?+

In coastal tourist areas like Canggu, Seminyak, Sanur and Uluwatu, AQI typically ranges from 40-80 - Good to Moderate. Sensitive individuals (asthma, allergies) may want to check the live readings on this page before extended outdoor activity. During dry season burning periods, inland areas can spike higher.

Which area in Bali has the cleanest air?+

Coastal areas with constant sea breeze - Sanur, Nusa Dua, Canggu, Uluwatu - typically show the lowest PM2.5 levels. Inland and densely-trafficked areas like central Denpasar can be higher, especially in the burning season.

When is air quality worst in Bali?+

Dry season (April through October) is typically worse due to agricultural burning and reduced rainfall washing pollutants from the air. Wet season (November through March) generally has cleaner air, especially after rainfall.
