North Bali Road Trip by Scooter
The North Bali road trip is one of the island's most rewarding scooter routes. You'll climb through terraced rice fields, pass waterfalls, reach the cool mountain town of Munduk, drop down to the black-sand beaches of Lovina, and return through Singaraja.

Route waypoints
Canggu / Seminyak
Start early (6-7am) to beat the heat and traffic. Fill up fuel before leaving.
Bedugul & Beratan Lake
1.5-2 hours from south Bali. The iconic lake temple Pura Ulun Danu sits on the water. Worth a short stop.
Munduk
Cooler mountain air, coffee plantations and several beautiful waterfalls within walking distance. Good place for breakfast or lunch.
Lovina Beach
Black sand beach on Bali's north coast. Much quieter than the south. Good for a swim and fresh seafood lunch.
Singaraja
Bali's second city. Interesting colonial architecture. Brief stop recommended.
Return south
Return via Kubutambahan and Kintamani for volcano views (adds 1-2 hours), or head straight south through Bedugul again.
From our experience
We have done this trip ourselves. The road north crosses the mountains, and after punctures, overheated brakes are the most common problem we see. On long descents the brake fluid can boil, and the brakes stop working. Engine braking is limited on an automatic scooter, so ride down slowly, brake in short pulses and stop to let the brakes cool.
Practical tips
- Start before 7am - North Bali roads are beautiful but the return can be tiring in afternoon heat
- Carry a rain jacket - mountain areas get afternoon showers even in dry season
- Honda ADV 160 or NMAX recommended - roads are mostly smooth but have some potholes and steep sections
- Fill up fuel in Lovina - petrol stations get sparse in mountain areas
- Phone signal is weak in some mountain sections - download offline maps before leaving
