Mount Batur and Kintamani: Bali's Coolest Corner
A volcano you can summit before breakfast. Mount Batur's sunrise trek is Bali's most satisfying morning - two hours of hiking in the dark rewarded by a panorama that makes the entire island make sense. And Kintamani village, perched on the caldera rim, is the best place to escape south Bali's heat.
Mount Batur: the accessible volcano
Batur is Bali's most popular volcano trek for good reason: it's achievable without being easy. The standard route takes 2 hours up and 1.5 hours down, summit at 1,717m, and the reward is sunrise over the caldera with Bali's coast visible in every direction on a clear morning.
Unlike Rinjani (Lombok) or Java's volcanoes, Batur requires no overnight camping. You wake at 3am in Kintamani, hike up in the dark with a headtorch, and arrive at the summit in time for a sunrise that turns the crater lake gold.
Mount Batur trek
The sunrise is the point
Batur is one of those experiences where the journey matters less than the moment at the top. Standing on the rim as the sky turns pink and orange over Bali's coast, with Lake Batur silver below and Lombok's Rinjani visible on the horizon - it's a complete-picture view of the island you've been exploring.
The summit is often cold - 12–15°C before sunrise. Bring a jacket. The cold makes the hot breakfast cooked by guides at the summit (eggs in volcanic steam) taste genuinely excellent.
Kintamani village: the caldera edge
Kintamani sits on the rim of Batur's ancient caldera at 1,500m elevation. It's noticeably cooler than south Bali - a relief in the hot months. The main street has tourist restaurants all facing the volcano panorama. Overpriced for what they are, but the view justifies the stop.
The caldera itself is 10km wide - the ancient volcano that Batur grew inside. Looking down, you can see the black lava fields from Batur's last major eruption in 1974.
Lake Batur
The caldera lake is the largest in Bali and a source of fresh water for the entire island through underground springs. You can descend to the lake shore - small villages around the water, fishing boats, hot springs accessible by small boat. The descent adds 2 hours to a day trip but shows a completely different perspective.
Getting there from south Bali
- From Canggu: 1.5–2 hours by scooter via Ubud and Tampaksiring
- Scenic route option: go via Tegallalang rice terraces and Pura Tirta Empul
- Stay in Kintamani the night before for an early summit start
- Most tour operators pick up from south Bali around midnight for a 4am summit
- Honda ADV 160 or NMAX recommended - the climb to Kintamani is steep
From our experience
We have ridden to Batur ourselves. The climb is only half of it: the ride back down from Kintamani is long, and overheated brakes are the second most common problem we see after punctures. The brake fluid can boil and the brakes stop working. Engine braking is limited on an automatic scooter, so ride down slowly, brake in short pulses and stop to let the brakes cool.
