Lombok: The Island Most Tourists Miss

Lombok sits 35km east of Bali. Most visitors see it from the plane window and keep scrolling. That's a mistake. A different island, different culture, and in some ways more beautiful than Bali - if you know where to go.

Why Lombok feels different from Bali

Bali gets three million tourists a year. Lombok gets a fraction of that. Roads are emptier, beaches are less crowded, and the pace is slower. The Sasak people - Lombok's indigenous inhabitants - have a distinct culture from Balinese Hinduism. Mosques, not temples, mark the landscape.

That said, Lombok is no longer undiscovered. The southern coast around Kuta Lombok has developed fast. The key is knowing where to go.

Mount Rinjani: the main reason to come

Rinjani is 3,726m - Indonesia's second highest volcano. The two-day trek to the crater rim is one of Southeast Asia's best hikes. At the top: a vast caldera holding a turquoise lake with a baby volcano growing inside it. The views on a clear morning stretch to Bali and beyond.

You can't drive to the top. There's no road. It's two days of walking, one night camping at the rim. Most trekkers hire a guide and porter from Sembalun or Senaru villages - don't attempt Rinjani without a local guide.

Best beaches

Lombok's south coast has beaches that rival - many say surpass - anything in Bali. Tanjung Aan is a double bay with brilliant white sand. Selong Belanak has gentle surf good for beginners. Mawun is quieter and more dramatic with hills on both sides.

How to get there from Bali

From our experience

We have made this trip ourselves. The ride to the ferry port is the tiring part: heat, dense traffic, poor roads and a lot of exhaust fumes. The ferry itself is fine, 3-4 hours depending on where you are going. Leave early and plan for a slow ride to the port.
