Komodo and Labuan Bajo: Indonesia's Greatest Adventure

A 1.5-hour flight from Bali opens up one of the world's most extraordinary nature destinations. Komodo dragons, manta rays, pink sand beaches and wooden sailing boats anchoring in turquoise bays. Labuan Bajo and Komodo National Park are as far from Bali's beach clubs as you can get.

Why Labuan Bajo?

Labuan Bajo is a small fishing town on the western tip of Flores island, roughly 500km east of Bali. It's the gateway to Komodo National Park - home to Komodo dragons, some of Indonesia's most spectacular diving, and the famous pink beach. The town has transformed from backpacker outpost to boutique resort destination in the past decade, but the nature remains extraordinary.

The liveaboard: the only real way to see it

The classic Komodo trip is a 3-day, 2-night liveaboard on a traditional wooden boat - a phinisi, the iconic Indonesian sailing vessel with carved prow and two masts. You eat, sleep and snorkel from the boat, anchoring at different islands each night.

Phinisi boats range from basic shared cabins for backpackers to fully air-conditioned boutique vessels with private en-suite cabins and proper beds. Price reflects quality: budget boats run from 2,000,000 IDR per person per night; mid-range 4,000,000–8,000,000 IDR; luxury 15,000,000 IDR+.

Komodo dragons

The dragons are real - the world's largest lizards, up to 3m long, and genuinely dangerous. Rangers accompany all visits. The dragons are wild animals that hunt deer, pigs and occasionally humans. Watching a 2.5m dragon lumber past at 2 metres is genuinely prehistoric.

The diving

Komodo is considered one of the world's top 10 dive destinations. Strong currents from the meeting of Indian Ocean and Pacific bring extraordinary marine life: manta rays, dolphins, whale sharks, hammerheads, sea turtles and the densest fish populations in Indonesia. Experienced divers rate it above the Gilis and most of Bali.

Padar Island: the unmissable viewpoint

A 20-minute hike up a steep ridge reveals the most photographed panorama in eastern Indonesia - three bays with differently coloured sand (white, black and pink) separated by dramatic ridgelines. No dragons on Padar - it's a pure landscape experience. Go at sunrise.

How to plan the trip from Bali

FAQ

How do you get to Komodo from Bali?+

Fly from Ngurah Rai (Bali) to Komodo Airport (Labuan Bajo) - 1.5 hours, flights from about 700,000 IDR one way. From Labuan Bajo you join a liveaboard boat or day trip to the national park.

How much does a Komodo liveaboard cost?+

Budget boats: 1,500,000–2,500,000 IDR per person per night. Mid-range: 4,000,000–8,000,000 IDR. Luxury phinisi: 15,000,000 IDR+. The price difference is accommodation quality - the nature you see is the same.

Is it safe to see Komodo dragons?+

Yes with rangers. All visits to Komodo and Rinca islands are guided - rangers carry forked sticks and know dragon behaviour. Attacks are rare and typically involve people who ignored instructions. Follow your ranger and don't wander alone.

What is the best month to visit Komodo?+

April to November. December to March brings rougher seas that can make liveaboards uncomfortable and some sites inaccessible. July and August are peak season - book well in advance.
