Best Cars for Bali, Lombok and Java Travel

A scooter covers most of Bali beautifully. For Java volcanoes, Lombok overland routes or travelling with family and luggage, a proper SUV changes the equation.

When a car makes more sense than a scooter

Scooters are good for Bali's town riding and day trips. But for volcano routes, family travel, carrying significant luggage, or multi-day explorations of Lombok or Java, a proper 4x4 or large SUV changes the experience completely.

Bali's roads climb seriously in places - the approach to Kintamani, the descent to Amed, the mountain roads to Bedugul. A modern SUV handles these confidently. The same roads in a low-clearance economy car require caution.

Toyota Fortuner: the expedition choice

The Fortuner is Indonesia's 4WD of choice for serious travel. Body-on-frame construction, decent ground clearance, 7 seats, and Toyota's legendary reliability in the tropics. Rental cost: 600,000–900,000 IDR per day for self-drive. For Lombok and Java overland trips, this is what local guides and tour operators use.

Mitsubishi Pajero Sport: the alternative

Similar positioning to the Fortuner - large SUV, high clearance, 7 seats, 4WD capability. Slightly sportier feel, popular in Bali's resort-adjacent rental market. Roughly the same daily rate as the Fortuner. Choose based on availability.

Toyota Raize: the Bali daily driver

For pure Bali use - day trips, airport runs, family beach outings - the compact Raize is the best fit. 5 seats, easy to park on narrow gang roads, 1.0T turbo engine handles the hills, fuel-efficient. Daily rate: 300,000–450,000 IDR. The most practical choice if you're not doing serious off-road or overland.

Suzuki Jimny: the cult option

The Jimny is Bali's Instagram car. Compact 4WD with genuine off-road capability, iconic styling, and the ability to access beach tracks and mountain paths that stop larger SUVs. Limited to 4 people with minimal luggage. Rental: 400,000–600,000 IDR per day. Worth it for the experience, impractical for serious touring with luggage.

With driver vs self-drive

Self-drive is significantly cheaper for multi-day rentals. Hiring a local driver adds 300,000–500,000 IDR per day but eliminates navigation stress, parking problems, and the fatigue of driving in unfamiliar conditions. For day trips or one-off excursions, a driver is often good value. For week-long Lombok overland, self-drive makes financial sense.

FAQ

What is the best car to rent in Bali?+

For Bali-only use: Toyota Raize - compact, fuel-efficient, handles the hills. For Lombok or Java overland: Toyota Fortuner or Mitsubishi Pajero Sport - higher clearance, 7 seats, more capable. For adventure/Instagram: Suzuki Jimny - but only fits 4 with minimal luggage.

Can I take a rental car from Bali to Lombok?+

Not directly - there's no road connection. You'd need to ship the car on a ferry (complex and expensive) or rent separately in Lombok. Most travellers rent in Bali, ferry to Lombok, and rent again there.

Is it safe to self-drive in Bali?+

Yes - millions of tourists self-drive in Bali each year. Left-hand traffic takes adjustment. The main challenges are GPS reliability on narrow roads and Bali's traffic in peak areas. An IDP with car category is required legally.

How much does it cost to rent a Toyota Fortuner in Bali?+

600,000–900,000 IDR per day for self-drive. With driver: add 300,000–400,000 IDR per day. Longer rentals (weekly, monthly) get significantly cheaper rates.
