Scooter Rental Insurance in Bali: What's Actually Covered

Insurance is the most misunderstood part of renting a scooter in Bali. Most tourists assume they're covered. Many aren't - at least not for what matters.

Does rental include insurance?

Short answer: usually no. Most scooter rentals in Bali do not include any insurance by default. You're renting the bike, not buying coverage. Some owners offer optional daily insurance for 20,000–50,000 IDR/day - always ask when booking.

When insurance is offered by an individual owner in Bali, it's often basic damage coverage for the bike only - not for you, not for third parties. Often it is handwritten on a small sheet of paper and very conditional. Still, in our experience, if an owner promised cover, they usually honour it within the excess. Read what's actually included before paying.

From our experience

The deposit is usually 500,000-2,000,000 IDR. It does not cover a medium or serious accident. It mostly exists so people treat the bike carefully and don't leave it in a ditch. Anything bigger is down to the rental's own cover, your travel insurance or your own pocket.

Your travel insurance: the critical check

This is the most important section. Your travel insurance may cover you - but there are conditions that many tourists miss until it's too late.

  • Valid license required: most travel insurance policies require you to hold a valid motorcycle license to be covered for accidents. A car-only license or no license = no coverage.
  • IDP required: many policies specify an International Driving Permit is needed for foreign countries. Check your policy document specifically.
  • Bike cc limit: some policies only cover bikes under a certain engine size (typically 125cc or 250cc). A Honda ADV 160 or performance bike may not be covered.
  • Helmet required: some policies void coverage if you weren't wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.
  • Activity exclusion: check if 'motorcycle riding' is listed as an excluded activity in your policy. Some adventure sports exclusions cover this.
  • What happens if you have an accident without coverage

Medical costs in Bali's private hospitals are significant - a broken leg with surgery can cost $5,000–$20,000 USD. Without travel insurance covering the incident, these costs fall entirely on you.

Bike damage is typically deducted from your deposit, or you'll be asked to pay for repairs. A cracked fairing or broken mirror can cost 500,000–2,000,000 IDR. A more serious accident involving the engine or frame can run much higher.

Third-party accidents (hitting another person or vehicle) are the most serious risk. Without any insurance, you're personally liable for medical bills, vehicle repairs and potential legal costs.

How to make sure you're actually covered

  • Get an IDP with motorcycle category before travelling - this is the key license requirement for most policies
  • Read your travel insurance policy's motorcycle section before renting, not after
  • Check engine size limits in your policy and match them to the bike you rent
  • Always wear a helmet - both for safety and insurance validity
  • If uncertain, call your insurer and ask specifically: 'Am I covered for riding a 155cc scooter in Indonesia with an IDP?'
  • Consider upgrading your travel insurance to one that explicitly covers motorcycles if yours doesn't

    FAQ

Does scooter rental in Bali include insurance?+

Usually no. Most rentals in Bali are uninsured by default. Some owners offer optional daily insurance for 20,000–50,000 IDR/day covering basic bike damage. This is not the same as personal injury or liability coverage.

Does travel insurance cover scooter accidents in Bali?+

It depends on your policy and whether you hold a valid motorcycle license (usually an IDP). Many policies exclude motorcycle accidents or require specific license conditions. Check your policy document before renting - not after an accident.

Do I need an IDP for travel insurance to cover me?+

Most travel insurance policies require you to hold the equivalent driving license for the vehicle you're riding, recognised in the country you're visiting. In Indonesia, that means an IDP with motorcycle category. Without it, most policies won't cover motorcycle accidents.

What happens to my deposit if I damage the rental bike?+

Damage costs are typically deducted from your security deposit. If damage exceeds the deposit, the owner will ask for additional payment. Always photograph the bike before riding to document pre-existing scratches - disputes are common.

Is there a simple way to get motorcycle insurance in Bali?+

Some travel insurance providers offer 'hazardous activities' add-ons that include motorcycle riding. World Nomads and SafetyWing are frequently mentioned by travellers as policies that explicitly cover motorcycle riding with a valid license.
