Best Areas in Bali for Renting a Scooter

Where you stay in Bali changes everything about your riding experience. Flat beach roads in Canggu feel completely different from Ubud's steep rice paddy lanes or Uluwatu's clifftop tracks.

Canggu: best overall for scooter riders

Canggu is consistently the best base for scooter riders in Bali. Roads are relatively flat, traffic is busy but predictable, and everything you need - warung, petrol, mechanic - is within a few kilometres. The main beach road connects Echo Beach to Berawa without needing to hit the main bypass.

It's also the best positioned area for day trips. Seminyak is 15 minutes south. Ubud is 45 minutes. Uluwatu is 50 minutes. Tanah Lot temple is 20 minutes north. You can do any major Bali destination as a day ride from Canggu.

  • Traffic: moderate - busy around main streets but manageable
  • Roads: mostly flat, good quality on main roads, some rough gang lanes
  • Best for: digital nomads, surf trips, day riders, first-time Bali visitors
  • Avoid: riding on Jl. Batu Bolong at peak hours (8–9am, 6–8pm)

    Ubud: best for scenic riding

Ubud is where Bali's most beautiful roads are. Rice terraces, jungle valleys, ancient temples on cliffsides - the riding is scenic in a way that coastal areas simply can't match. But Ubud has hills. Real hills. The roads down to the Ayung River valley or up to Kintamani involve serious gradients.

110cc scooters will struggle on Ubud's steeper roads, especially with a passenger. A 150cc+ bike (NMAX, PCX or ADV 160) is strongly recommended. Narrow roads through rice field villages are frequent - take them slowly and watch for pedestrians and ceremony processions.

  • Traffic: light outside the town centre, moderate in central Ubud
  • Roads: hilly, narrow in places, excellent condition on main routes
  • Best for: scenic riders, photographers, longer day trips, experienced riders
  • Recommended bike: NMAX, PCX or ADV 160 - not a 110cc Scoopy
  • Parking: central Ubud is largely pedestrianised - park on the outskirts and walk

    Seminyak: convenient but busy

Seminyak's roads are flat and well-maintained, but it's the busiest area in Bali by traffic volume. The main streets (Jl. Laksmana, Jl. Kayu Aya) are permanently congested during daytime. Side streets offer relief but require local knowledge to navigate efficiently.

Seminyak works well as a base if you're doing short, local rides - beach to restaurant, villa to beach club. For longer exploring, the traffic getting in and out wastes time. Many Seminyak visitors use scooters purely for local errands and taxis for anything beyond.

  • Traffic: heavy - worst in south Bali
  • Roads: flat, good quality, but constantly congested
  • Best for: short local rides, beach access, experienced urban riders
  • Avoid: Sunset Road and Jl. Raya Seminyak at all peak times
  • Day trips: easier to leave early morning before traffic builds

Uluwatu: clifftop riding with a view

The Bukit Peninsula (Uluwatu area) has some of Bali's most dramatic roads - narrow clifftop tracks with ocean views, winding down to hidden beaches. The riding is genuinely enjoyable but requires attention. Many roads are narrow one-lane tracks where two scooters barely pass.

Uluwatu is spread out. Without a scooter you're stuck - distances between spots are too far to walk and taxi costs add up quickly. A scooter is close to essential here. Roads are generally quiet compared to north Canggu or Seminyak.

  • Traffic: light - much quieter than north Bali tourist areas
  • Roads: narrow, some steep descents, good overall quality
  • Best for: surfers, experienced riders, couples exploring clifftop spots
  • Watch out: tight corners on clifftop roads, especially wet season
  • Must-visit roads: Jl. Labuansait, road to Bingin, Nyang Nyang access

    Sanur: the underrated choice

Sanur is Bali's most underrated area for scooter riders. Flat roads, a wide beachfront path (actually usable by scooter in parts), light traffic even during peak hours, and genuinely local feel. Sanur is also Bali's first official Low Emission Zone - electric scooters are encouraged here.

From Sanur you can reach Ubud in 35 minutes (closer than from Canggu), Nusa Dua in 20 minutes, and the airport in 15 minutes. It's an underappreciated base that removes a lot of the traffic stress associated with Seminyak or Kuta.

  • Traffic: light - least congested major tourist area
  • Roads: flat, wide, well-maintained
  • Best for: families, digital nomads, low-stress riding, EV scooters
  • LEZ status: electric scooters preferred - see electric scooter guide
  • Day trips: excellent position for Ubud, Nusa Dua, Klungkung

    FAQ

Which area in Bali has the best roads for scooters?+

Canggu has the best balance of road quality, flat terrain and connectivity. Uluwatu has the most scenic roads. Ubud has beautiful roads but with significant hills. Sanur has the flattest, quietest roads of any major tourist area.

Is Ubud good for scooter riding?+

Yes, but bring a 150cc+ bike - Ubud's hills will challenge a 110cc scooter, especially with a passenger. The roads are beautiful and traffic is light outside the town centre. Narrow rice paddy lanes require care and slower speed.

Which Bali area has the worst traffic?+

Seminyak and Kuta have the heaviest traffic in Bali. The main streets are congested most of the day. Canggu's main strip gets busy but has better alternatives. Sanur and Uluwatu have the lightest traffic.

Where should I base myself in Bali for scooter day trips?+

Canggu is the best base for day trips - centrally positioned with good access to Uluwatu (50 min), Ubud (45 min), Tanah Lot (20 min) and Seminyak (15 min). Sanur is slightly better positioned for East Bali and Ubud.

Can I ride a scooter from Canggu to Uluwatu?+

Yes - it's about 45–55 minutes via the bypass. The ride takes you through Seminyak and Kuta (busy) and then south on the Bukit Peninsula road (quieter). A pleasant morning ride leaving before 8am.
